Nitrates are a nitrogen compound that forms naturally. Nitrates consist of a single nitrogen atom connected to three oxygen atoms and are very stable, which make it very difficult to deal with when it is in your swimming pool water. Nitrates enter the pool water in numerous ways. Fertilizers, decaying plant matter, rain, and even our tap water are among some of the sources of nitrates. The E.P.A. has set a maximum nitrate level of 10 ppm in city water supplies. Normally, nitrates will build up over time before starting to have a negative impact on your swimming pool water.
Nitrates will affect the pool water by increasing the sanitizer demand in the pool water, causing the sanitizer levels to deplete very quickly. The results can range from using more sanitizer than is normal for the pool, cloudy water that will not clear and will make the swimming pool more prone to algae blooms that either will not clear up or will start to improve but quickly turn green again.
Now for the answer to the biggest question, there is no easy way to remove the nitrates from your swimming pool water. The only way to remove nitrates is to drain and refill the swimming pool with water that is nitrate free. If you have a vinyl liner pool or a fiberglass swimming pool, you cannot drain the entire pool. With these swimming pools the pool owner will have to flush the water by removing small amounts of the pool water and refilling the pool until the nitrate level is reduced.
Phosphates are derived from phosphorous, which finds its way into our swimming pool water in different ways. Fertilizer, industrial discharges, decaying plant matter, some detergents, swimmer waste ( urine, sweat, and cosmetics ) and even tap water are all possible sources of phosphates.
After phosphates are broken down into orthophosphates they cannot be oxidized any further, which means our sanitizers ( oxidizers ) are not effective and may make it difficult to maintain a free chlorine reading. Phosphates are a vital plant nutrient that at even low concentrations in your swimming pool water can cause algae growth and increase chlorine usage.
Just because your swimming pool water turns green, it does not mean you have phosphates in your water. Any swimming pool can have an algae bloom if the sanitizer level is not properly maintained or the circulation system is not running long enough for your swimming pool.
Most pool stores can test for phosphates and if they are present can supply you with a phosphate remover and guidelines for treatment. Unless you have phosphates in your fill water, usually there is no need to add a phosphate remover on a weekly basis or as part of your swimming pool maintenance routine.
“ What’s the best automatic pool sweep ? “ is one of the most common questions we hear. This question is also one the most difficult to answer. All automatic pool sweeps are designed to help the swimming pool owner maintain a clean swimming pool. The pool sweep will not clean up storm debris or a swimming pool neglected during the off-season.
Here are the three types of Automatic Pool Sweeps :
Suction Side Cleaner : The suction style cleaners attach to a suction port in the pool, this will be either the skimmer or a dedicated suction line in the pool wall. With the hose attached to the cleaner and the pool pump running, suction is created on the underside of the pool cleaner. The cleaner moves around the pool while vacuuming dirt and debris through the hose and sending it to the pump basket and pool filter.
Pressure Side Cleaner : This cleaner uses a feed hose that attaches to a dedicated return / cleaner line in the side of the swimming pool and requires a separate booster pump to operate. The booster pump pulls water from the pool and pushes the water through the dedicated cleaner return line, through the feed hose and into the cleaner, creating a vacuum that draws the debris into a bag that is attached to the cleaner while it moves around the swimming pools. The pressure side cleaners will clean most swimming pools in about two hours.
Robotic Cleaner : The robotic pool sweeps operate independently from the swimming pool circulation system. Robotic cleaners brush and vacuum the pool floor and walls, while providing extra filtration of the pool water. They require no installation, no hoses, and no separate booster pump. Robotic cleaners have their own drive motor and pump that pull the debris into a bag inside the body of the cleaner and move the cleaner throughout the swimming pool. Just plug the cleaner in and put it in the pool. It is a self-contained pool sweep.
Automatic pool sweeps help take the work and hassle out keeping your swimming pool clean and inviting. Choosing the right pool sweep for your swimming pool can be difficult due to all the different options that are available. Consult with your pool professional to make sure that you pick the correct automatic pool sweep for your application so that you can enjoy spending more time in your swimming pool and spend less time cleaning and working on your swimming pool.
One of the most important aspects of properly maintaining your swimming pool is to make sure the water stays in balance. Proper water balance protects your swimming pool equipment and pool surfaces from damage and costly repairs as well as making the pool water comfortable to swim in.
There are a few factors that make up water balance. Let’s look at them;
pH : this is the scale used to measure the active acid or base nature of the swimming pool water. The ideal range is between 7.4 and 7.6, when the pH of the swimming pool water is below 7.4 it is considered acidic and corrosive. Above 7.6 the swimming pool water is considered too alkaline and is prone to scaling.
Alkalinity : refers to the alkaline matter dissolved in the swimming pool water. The ideal range is between 80-120 ppm. Properly maintaining the alkalinity minimizes pH bounce and helps hold the pH level at the correct level. Low alkalinity lets the pH bounce above and below the proper level. High alkalinity will let the pH rise and make it difficult to lower the pH level and is also prone to scaling.
Calcium Hardness : is the level of dissolved minerals ( mostly calcium carbonate) in your swimming pool water. The ideal range is between 200-400 ppm for gunite swimming pools and between 175-400 ppm for vinyl liner and fiberglass swimming pools. Low calcium harness leads to pool equipment corrosion and plaster etching. High calcium levels can cause cloudy water and scaling.
Cyanuric Acid : also known as conditioner or stabilizer. This chemical is only used in chlorine sanitized swimming pools or a saltwater swimming pool. This protects the chlorine from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. The ideal range is between 30-100 ppm.
Total Dissolved Solids : this is a measure of all things dissolved in your swimming pool water. The ideal range is between 0-2000 ppm and is very broad range. This factor very rarely is a problem in swimming pools.
Note : We did not discuss sanitizers in this post because there numerous options available and sanitizers are technically not part of water balance. Swimming pool sanitizers are covered in another post.
The primary job of the sanitizer is to keep the swimming pool water free from bacteria, algae, and other contaminants. Sanitizers also help keep the water clear and clean. The most common sanitizers used in swimming pools are chlorine, bromine, and biguanide. Alternative sanitizing systems used more recently include Salt water Pools, Ionization, and Ozone systems. Let’s take a brief look at these sanitizing options;
Chlorine : this is the most commonly used and least expensive sanitizer for swimming pools. Usually, 3 inch chlorine tablets ( 1 inch chlorine tablets or skimmer sticks can be used as well ) are used along with a granular type of chlorine shock to oxidize the contaminants in the swimming pool water.
Bromine : is also an effective sanitizer / oxidizer. Bromine comes in 1 inch tablets and is also used with a chlorine shock. It is more stable in warm water than chlorine and works better in high alkaline and higher pH swimming pool water. Bromine is not used as much as chlorine due to the cost difference.
Biguanide : more popularly known as “ Baquacil “ this is a hydrogen peroxide based sanitizing system. Biguanides are not compatible with any other sanitizers or metallic based algaecides.
Salt Water : Salt systems are equipment that is added to the swimming pool pump and filter system. Salt is added to swimming pool water. As the saltwater passes through the salt cell, the salt is converted into chlorine to sanitize the pool. Yes, a saltwater pool is still a chlorine pool, but the chlorine that is being generated is not as irritating to the eyes and skin.
Ionization : this type of sanitizing system is also a piece of equipment that is added to the swimming pool pump and filter system. This system works by injecting copper and silver ions into the pool water to provide sanitation. In most climates, these systems will require some chlorine to keep the swimming pool clean and clear.
Ozone : This piece of equipment artificially creates ozone as the water passes through and then is injected into the water in the return line going back to the swimming pool. This works faster than chlorine and other chemicals to kill bacteria and oxidize other contaminates, they do not however, leave a residual to continue this important job. In hotter climates ozone will generally not keep up with the sanitizing demands of a swimming pool without the assistance of another sanitizer.
